An exhibition to commemorate The Great Gale of 1824.
On the night of 22nd November 1824 a storm of unprecedented ferocity hit the Dorset coast, flooding many houses, destroying villages in its path and claimed many lives during the two days that it besieged the coast. The village of Chiswell, Portland was partly demolished by the hurricane-force storm and 25 lives were lost during the storm.
This exhibition explores archived personal stories, as well as the factors that caused it, and how we can predict and prepare for a possible similar event in the future. The exhibition includes a new sound piece by artist Jo Tyler, including the voices of many local sailors.
This event is part of a touring exhibition by Dorset Coast Forum you can find out more HERE
Please note the exhibition opening hours on Sunday Nov 24th are 1pm – 4pm
