Katarina has created a series of artworks based upon a collection of Portland diaries from the 18th and 19th centuries, combined with historical accounts, museum artefacts, and investigations into specific sites across the Island where her artworks are embedded.
‘The Charm Shop’ has been inspired by a short tale ‘A Southwell Maid’s Diary’ about a man called Notter who claims to have been followed by a ghost one night. Embellishing on the original tale Katarina imagines that she is a man called ‘Notter’ who is attempting to capitalise on the popular beliefs and folklore of the Island, creating a collection of items for sale based on well-known stories, cures and superstitions still in existence at the turn of the 19th century.
