Maddi is a multi-disciplinary artist with a socially engaged practice, based in Dorset.
My work is informed by the natural environment and features obscured depictions of plants, landscapes, and environments shaped by my imagination and that of others. I learn from the places I work in, integrating site-responsive material like clay from natural deposits and pigments extracted from plants and spices.
The resulting large-scale drawings and paintings on fabric or paper become storytelling tapestries that subtly reflect my autobiographic experiences. They hold the stories of the individuals involved in the socially interactive process essential to my practice, touching on themes of immigration, connections to land and nature, and intersectional discourse.
Otherworldliness and dreamscape are key stylistic approaches for constructing the imaginative worlds depicted in the work, serving as a commentary on the experience of belonging. Installed to hang like walkways or passages, the work evokes a wider investigation of ancestral research into my Great Grandmother’s immigration story, which informs my ongoing understanding of place and belonging.
Previous works of the same branch include the recent exhibitions, Azeline, A Journey, BEAF Arts Festival and Treacle Landscape, Sveia and Swaeth, Tracks and Streams.
