We have been working with the New Curators since 2021, providing support, mentoring, training and opportunities.
After a successful funding application, the group were able to offer a paid commission opportunity for an artist to create a new piece of work to be shown at the festival in 2023.
We are pleased to announce that Dorset-based artist Carrie Mason has been selected for the New Curators Opes and Dreams Commission 2023.
The Siren will work an archive of Portland hopes into a sculpture of knotted and braided rope and copper to create a device that borders dreams and realities by chiming futuristic warnings and taking the appearance of a creature from the mythological past.
Carrie has started by researching historical and community knot-making and looking at knots as a symbol of binding people together in relationships and communities.
If you would like to be part of Carrie’s research and share your hopes for Portland she inviting anyone to come along for an informal chat on the things that bind an island community and to hear more about her proposed artwork The Siren.
Just drop in Thursday 15 June 4pm – 8pm at Party Wall, 77 Harbourview Road, Portland, Dorset
