Creating a positive future for Portland, its people and places.
Find out about Future Portland and its potential for Portland, drop in anytime – key updates at 2.15pm.
A lot has been going on behind the scenes in recent months as b-side, ICA, and The Portland
Association finalised the creation of Future Portland – a Community Benefit Society (CBS).We will present updates on the CBS, current projects, and how you can get involved and own
a share in this exciting new community initiative.
Our reasons for doing this are simple but compelling. We know that Portland has been
impacted by more than its fair share of challenges over the past few decades, including the
steady loss of our amenities, community buildings and much-loved green spaces and heritage
sites. With recent consultation showing a strong desire to tackle these challenges but equal
acknowledgement that no individual or single organisation can achieve this alone, we came
together to form a community company (owned by you, the community) that could help us do
it together.
Future Portland will give the people of Portland a louder voice, with increased opportunities to
deliver their priorities and take collaborative action over what happens to our island’s assets.
Already, the CBS is working on projects suggested by you, the community, following our
previous engagement work as individual organisations. This work includes b-side’s Heritage
Lottery-funded This Land initiative, ICA’s Portland Community Forum and youth-based
consultation events, Portland Youth Council’s discussions, and the in-depth research carried
out by The Portland Association.
With the initial listening done, now is the time for doing.
Our efforts so far have included submitting a community bid for The Pulpit Inn. Although this bid
wasn’t accepted, this hasn’t deterred us, and we continue to work on other ways to secure
funding. We are also progressing possibilities for saving St Peter’s Church and an ‘at-risk’
community green space. These are just a few of the many projects we could support and
develop with and on behalf of our community. BUT to do so,
Future Portland really needs your support!
