This Beguiling Isle
A collaborative exhibition between artist Amanda Wallwork and writer Christopher Stocks, This Beguiling Isle celebrates Portland’s unique character, history and geology.
Amanda Wallwork’s paintings, The Lost Fields of Portland, were inspired by a hand-drawn map of the island, made in 1841 when Portland was still mainly pastureland, which records the often poetic names of hundreds of fields now long lost to quarrying. Amanda will also be showing a selection of her tactile Portland ‘geospheres’ and geological specimen collections.
Christopher Stocks is a journalist and author of four books, including The Book of Pebbles, published by Thames & Hudson, with illustrations by the artist Angie Lewin. Born in Yorkshire, he has lived on Portland for the last 25 years, and has won a Bridport Prize for his poetry. His poems for This Beguiling Isle respond to Amanda’s work, and also take an affectionate look at his adoptive home.
