Award winning project comes to an end

The High Angle Battery Cultural Programme – Rediscovering High Angle Battery – has now come to an end, bringing a remarkable year of activity to a close. We’ve been delighted to work in partnership with Dorset Council to widen access to this historic site on Portland, inviting people to experience High Angle Battery in new and unexpected ways.

Throughout the year, the programme hosted a diverse range of events, from creative workshops and performances to exhibitions and community-led activities. Each event revealed the extraordinary potential of High Angle Battery as a cultural space, capturing the imagination of artists and audiences alike and breathing new life into this unique Victorian fort.

The impact of the programme has been recognised through several awards. We were honoured to receive a Civic Award for the project and proud that the cultural programme was Highly Commended by Archaeology UK in the Public Dissemination category.

As Archaeology UK noted:

“Rediscovering High Angle Battery has revitalised Portland’s Victorian fort, weaving together heritage, creativity, and community voices to transform a forgotten site into a vibrant cultural space.

A truly inspiring category celebrating imagination, connection, and community storytelling.”

As the programme comes to a close, we’d like to thank everyone who took part—artists, audiences, partners, and the local community—who helped make Rediscovering High Angle Battery such a success. Together, we’ve shown how heritage sites can become living, creative spaces that connect people with place, history, and each other.
