Painter Wendy Elia was commissioned to paint the portrait of a local person who in true Olympic fashion pushed their body to the extreme. Local triathlete Rowena Taylor was chosen from many applicants wanting to be the face and body of Weymouth and for the last few months Rowena has been sitting for Wendy in her studio. This new portrait for Weymouth will be appearing in all the unlikely and unexpected places that b-side has grown to love.
“The expression “it will cost an arm and a leg“ originates from portraiture before the invention of photography. The cheapest portrait was just a head, then going up in price on a sliding scale to add shoulders, a half body including arms and the most expensive would be a full figure portrait (including legs!) – like those we are familiar with of kings and queens. This full length contemporary portrait includes attributes and a view of Weymouth Bay in the background.”
