Andy-3 Tug Boat Captain

Paul Wenham-Clarke

Paul’s previous work illustrates his strong desire to communicate with the public on social and environmental subjects that he feels passionate about. Whether it is loss of human and animal life on our roads, or the terrible plight of the homeless, or just having to exist in a deeply urban environment, the work makes us take a look at ourselves, and our lifestyle choices.

Some of the images make uneasy viewing whilst others draw the eye with a surface beauty. However, they all contain an underlying message that questions our priorities and our very way of living. Paul has had work exhibited at The National Portrait Gallery, The Victoria & Albert Museum and had two solo shows at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Crypt Gallery in Trafalgar Square. Paul is a Professor of Photography at the Arts University Bournemouth.

The Rock: above & below

“My latest project on Portland explores the lives and environments above and below ground. I have explored the secret cathedral like spaces created by the mining of Portland Stone and photographed the individuals working there. In contrast to this I have made photographic portraits of members of the local community who have lived on the island for many years and whose lives have been shaped by this landscape. The work comprises of photography and personal interviews.”
