A project that explores ancestry, identity and personal histories.
Do you know the TV programme, Who Do You Think You Are? where celebrities research their ancestry? Well b-side thought it would be exciting to do something similar on Portland. And, after asking lots of people and groups on the island, it seems lots of people agree!
All our stories add to the rich tapestry of island life.
Perhaps it’s not who you were yesterday that matters to you, but who you are today.
What would a map of Portland look like if everyone’s story of migration, from around the corner to across the globe could be documented and celebrated? A vast interconnected web of stories and places, people and cultures.
What is this project about?
Who Do We Think We Are? is about all the people who share the island as home. It will be a chance for us all to explore our stories of travel, migration, ancestry and identity through workshops, journalism and artworks that celebrate everyone, young old, Kimberlin or Portlander.
Think you don’t have story to tell? Not sure where to start researching your family tree? Wondering if your story will be as dramatic as someone else’s? We can help.
This is a project that enjoys the subtle, the local, the global and the wildly extraordinary!
