Heart of Stone community project is a new and original family-friendly performance of outdoor theatre in the round, with story, music and performance co-created by local communities, and led by a professional creative team during a project that has spanned three years. The Portland Players have made and perform the play initially written by Sarah Acton, and led in a series of theatre-making workshops throughout the summer and at the Atlantic Academy and Westfield Arts College, by theatre director, Charmaine K Parkin and professional actors.
Inspired by discussion cafes with local quarrymen about their early careers in the stone industry at Portland Museum in 2019, the play is about Portland Stone and life on the island in living, geological and mythical memory, with lots of songs performed by the Island Voices Community Choir. Also including oral history and Portland people, such as the stonemason Portland poets: Skylark Durston, George Davey and Bob Wollage plus writer Gordon ‘Boy’ Male. The play is a celebration of landscape, music, and voice of stone, the working people of Portland, and the stone that built great cities such as London and Liverpool.
Please bring rugs or low chairs to sit on and dress for the weather!
This project has received funding and support from Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grant and the Dorset Community Foundation Performing Arts Fund.
